Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding

I recently received complimentary tickets to Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, the longest running interactive Off-Broadway experience in New York City. While being seated for the wedding ceremony, I spoke with Johnny (Tony’s brother), who remembered me as the smart girl in high school that he used to cheat off of, so we had a good laugh about that. We are also introduced to the loud-mouthed Italian families taking part in the wedding, including the crazy brothers and cousins, aunts and the hilarious grandmother. (Pictured below)

Tina walked down the aisle toward the stage and looked beautiful in her billowy beautiful wedding dress!

The ceremony was lovely, starting off with Sister Albert Maria singing a religious song and getting the whole audience to join her. One of Tina’s bridesmaids and her maid of honor read from the Bible (the well known love passage from 1st Corinthians 13:4-8 and a scripture about marriage). There was also the ceremonial lighting of candles and vows being exchanged between Tony and Tina.

After the ceremony, we all headed to Guy’s American Kitchen for the reception. My friend and I sat at the Sinatra table.

Upon arrival, I saw the lovely & pristine layered white wedding cake…

Dinner was provided… We had bread, which was just your run of the mill soft bread. Then came large vegetarian dumplings with soy sauce, served on a bed of purple lettuce and vinaigrette. The dumplings were pretty tasty, but there was only enough for one each. I would’ve liked to have another one. A bit later, we went to the buffet for our entree, which was salad, pasta with vegetables and tomato sauce. I enjoyed the vegetables the most– They were fresh and flavorful but the rest of the meal was mediocre.

Then there was cake… Even though it was a small piece, I really enjoyed it. It was light, fluffy, not too sweet and tasted delicious!

Also at the reception, we met Danny Dulce the wedding singer. Danny really knew which songs to perform and my friend & I had a great time dancing to the tunes. We got to see a extravagant Champagne Walk and then the drama continued as the bride, groom and all parties got drunker as the night wore on… Tony & others from the wedding party taking their shirts off, ex lovers getting back together, Conga line, the bouquet/garter toss and more!  There was also a fight between Tina and her pregnant maid of honor (as well as best friend) and later, between Tony and his brother, Johnny. Tony later told me not to encourage his little brother!

I had such a wonderful time at Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding and found it to be an original, creative and incredibly entertaining immersion experience — You really feel like you are a part of the wedding!

Springtime Experiences

It is finally Spring and I have been quite busy in the past few weeks…

I received a hair cut from Bumble & Bumble Model Project. The style of the cut was layers with bangs so now my hair is slightly past my shoulders, which initially seemed like quite a bit cut off but have gotten used to it now. I also got my hair dyed a reddish brown color. Below, is the new color.

I finally had the chance to visit Empire State Building observatory deck for the very first time, with one of my friends who was able to get a discount for us. It was a breathtaking experience and I loved the gorgeous views of the city! And sunset which was absolutely beautiful, bathing the whole city in an orange-pinkish glow. This touristy activity is well worth it.

I attended the exciting Supreme Asian Chef Culinary Battle in Atlantic City (with free appetizers and drinks!) with a great group of people. There were six chefs total battling for two spots to compete in Las Vegas. We got to see the chefs cook up a storm, with amazing creations using the ingredients: Sea bass, mushroom and egg.

I had a chance to see the iLuminate Artist of Light Show performance, which got its beginnings on “America’s Got Talent.” It is a dance-in-the-dark adventure, with an electrifying mash-up of music, technology and illusions. It tells the story of an artist who has a magic paintbrush that brings characters to life, who inadvertently creates monsters who threaten to destroy everything he holds dear. Below, a photo of me with some of the cast members.

Spending the evening in Long Island, ice skating at Iceland Rink to popular hit songs was loads of fun then heading to the Cheesecake Factory, which is my #1 favorite chain restaurant.

The Cheesecake Factory has an awesome menu and something new called “Skinnylicious” menu which is lower calorie items. I selected the steak medallions, which came with mashed potatoes, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, mushroom and red wine sauce. Absolutely delicious and fresh and at half the calorie count!

Getting to see Broadway musical, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical which “tells the inspiring true story of Carole King’s remarkable rise from teenage songwriter to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.” It was wonderful with an amazingly talented cast. I really enjoyed the bliss of hearing pop hits, such as “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love,” and “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling,” which all gave me the feeling to get up and dance!

Attending an ElectroYoga Pop Up event, which got my adrenaline running as we paired traditional yoga moves and positions (as well as some interesting lifting and twisting of body) with fast beats and bass. After the workout, we had small bites: Fruit, popcorn, chips & hummus and vendors of sweet treats, chocolate, tea, makeup, clothing and free massages.

electroyogaLive taping of “America’s Got Talent” auditions in Madison Square Garden, which is always a treat. It’s so much fun to see the acts, especially the amazing ones. I especially liked the opening act, a slew of Asian dancers in green who did this lovely Jasmine ballet routine that all the judges were awed by. Most of the other acts were just okay by comparison, but there were a couple of other decent dance acts, a singing act and a very unique & interesting one involving flying/lit up wooden animals that involved a bit of song and dance. Then of course there were a bunch of really bad ones, which was entertaining as well especially because they usually think they did pretty well. And I love seeing Nick Cannon and my favorite judge, Howie Mandel! I also knew the warm up comedian, Tom Kelly (from the days when I made my living attending television shows like “The Newlywed Game” and “The View”) and he actually remembered me by name! Always a pleasure to run into him.

Today, I had the chance to enjoy a cute little place called Just Sweet Cafe. It’s mostly desserts, some nice bubble tea options and a few appetizer and noodle/rice dish options. There wasn’t too much to choose from for the savory treats, so I just ordered the green onion pancake with curry. The pancake tasty- Very thin and extremely crispy- and not as oily as usually so that was a plus. Also the curry had a nice flavor to it and wasn’t at all spicy. It came with potatoes which was yummy.

Then I ordered a special dessert that consisted of Taiwanese shaved ice topped with green tea ice cream, condensed milk, red bean, mochi of varying colors, mango, strawberry and kiwi. Such a delightful combination of flavors, textures and colors! All the ingredients came together beautifully and the condensed milk brought everything together perfectly. It was delectable!

Night at the Museum of the Moving Image

I finally had a chance to visit the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. It is free on Friday nights from 4-8pm. When first walking into the lobby, there’s a huge wall of moving images from famous movies & television shows, titled “The Reaction GIF – Moving Image as Gestures,” with cleverly worded tags about each. It featured key scenes from The Muppets, Liar Liar, Tina Fey, Oprah, Dawson’s Creek and many more.

Beyond the wall, there is a lovely snow white café area and outdoor courtyard (closed for the season) with a minimalist and simplistic beauty.

The second level boasts a large screen that shows scenes from older films and previews from newer movies. Then a wall full of gorgeous black and white head shots of classic actors and actresses. The lighting and level of photography for each image was superb.

Next, there was a section featuring costumes and outfits from famous movies, which brought back memories of each movie. There were also famous masks, displays of makeup, horror movie memorabilia from actual movie sets.

There were also set models for different scenes and specific movies. Below, is the adorable set model for the Muppets Take Manhattan!

Toward the back there was a huge old-time movie theater area (named Tut’s Fever) with lovely sights and colorful statues, as well as a little (slightly scary) surprise in the dark hallway…

After that we headed upstairs where there was a dark room with spotlights of light in varying flashes and frequencies, brightening and dimming. This was both touching and powerful, called Last Day in the Beginning of March, “a rhythmic narrative—chronicling the last day of the life of the artist’s brother. Each of the 26 light bulbs suspended from the ceiling is connected to an electronic circuit containing a fictionalized, digital ‘memory’ of a specific event.”

One of my favorite exhibits was this gorgeous set of bright glittering lights that have the appearance of people walking by as you walk further away from it.

Another favorite was this huge black and white clock that has a camera connected to it so that when you are in front of the clock, you can see a photograph of yourself within the clock.

I also loved an interactive exhibit that allows you to record a 5 second video of yourself that can then be turned into your own personal flip book. For my video, I blew a kiss, did an awesome spin (getting some great hair in the wind look) and ended with a hair flip. The customized flip book is around $11.

After that, we stopped by one of the rooms to record our voice so we could hear it played in a popular movie. I chose Dorothy in “Wizard of Oz.” It was a lot of fun and I actually sounded like the actual Dorothy!

Then we saw a whole display of old-style TV sets, bathed in cool purple light.

There was also a set of 6 mini TV’s projects your image onto the screen and starts off clear then fades out slowly on each subsequent television screen.

Overall exploring the Museum of the Moving Image was a wonderful, interactive and fun experience. I would definitely recommend checking this place out!

Chinese New Year Parade at AC

This past weekend, I walked in the Chinese New Year Parade in Atlantic City with some great friends- Some I already knew and many I just met with the group,  Asian in NY. We each were given a special costume to wear during the parade. Mine was a lovely shiny orange color with gold brocading and flower design detailing.

There were also bigger Victorian style dresses that I absolutely loved. My favorite is the white one with pale shimmery pink satin and gold accents.

We finally got into formation for the parade and got to stand on one of the floats. It was pretty awesome to be up high and see everything from that vantage point.

However, only a certain number of people were allowed to be on the float, so we had to walk the rest of the parade. It turned out to be not so bad- It had started to snow gently, which was better than last year when it rained.  We walked on the boardwalk and then through a couple casinos. I had a wonderful time waving to spectators and fans, and enjoyed having my picture snapped and getting cheered or clapped on. The parade ended at Bally’s and we got to see an amazing lion dance performance.

After that, we were all very hungry so was happy to indulge in a free buffet lunch. There were chicken wings, veal, sausage, mashed potato, pastas, chow mien, pork dumplings, vegetable stir fry and more. The food itself was mediocre at best, but we couldn’t really complain… After all, it was free!

DSCN6970When we were finished eating, we headed to Caesar’s Ballroom to pick up our free gift. They were cute little tea cup with a top and spoon with sweet adorable designs.

We spent some time shopping at Caesar’s Outlets after that and even got to see part of the water fountain show.

It had such a lovely time with everyone: Great costumes, good conversations, much laughter,  fun times, lasting memories…

Greenwich Village Food Tour

I recently had the pleasure of doing a Greenwich Village Food Tour with Free Tours By Foot. We made 6 stops and learned some history along the way, which was a nice bonus. Below are the places we tried:

Our first food stop was Mamoun’s Falafel, a favorite among NYU students and for good reason: It is delicious and cheap.

I sampled one of the falafel balls with tahini sauce, which was incredibly flavorful and warm.

Next, we sampled ¼ of an Artichoke Pizza slice for $1, which was definitely enough! It was a slice of creamy, cheesy goodness, though I would have appreciated more artichoke pieces.

Bantum Bagels was actually one of the places I didn’t know about. They sell bite sized bagels with cream cheese filling inside. I was tempted to buy one of each flavor, but realized that would be way too much so settled for two bagel bites: One sweet and one savory. Bleecker Street was a delicious mouthwatering little ball of cheddar cheese with a pepperoni on the outside and marinara mozzarella  cream sauce on the inside. The French Toast flavor is made out of a cinnamon nutmeg egg bagel and filled with buttery maple syrupy cream cheese. It was delightful, tasting of sweet toast, cinnamon and sugar.

At Faicco’s we tried the risotto rice balls, which were mediocre. I wasn’t too impressed; it wasn’t flavorful and cheesy enough for me.

Bleecker Street Pizza is a well known thin crust pizza establishment. We tried the basil cheese kind and enjoyed the fresh flavors.

The last place we visited was Sugar & Plumm. Unfortunately, their ice cream parlor shop in the back was closed, so I couldn’t get a milkshake. I was quite happy with the hot chocolate actually- It was sweet and very rich with chocolate flavor. It was made even better by the addition of a huge sweet, thick and fluffy marshmallow. I also tried their salted caramel French macaron which was a bit too sweet for me. I would skip the macaron if you go; there are far better places.

Overall, a very fun, delicious and informative tour… Also, it was very affordable- I ended up spending under $15 at all 6 establishments!

New Year’s Eve

Flying from CA –> NYC on the Red Eye with a stopover in Atlanta, arriving back on the East Coast afternoon of New Year’s Eve and realizing that my luggage was not at JFK. Apparently it was still in Atlanta! Thankfully, it wasn’t a big issue because I had all my necessary items (including my NYE dress) in my carry on. After ensuring that I would get my delayed luggage delivered to my apartment, I headed home for some much needed rest before going out for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

So, what did I wear? Hot pink & silver glitter, an Enfocus Studio dress with filmy light pink V-neck top with black skirt bottom & sparkly black sequined middle, paired with black high heel boots that have silver sparkles.

On the way to the venue, I ran into a friend who was going to the same party, which was great timing (also because he didn’t see me fall on the little pothole in the concrete). The venue was beautiful- Wood floors, high ceilings, glittering golden drapes, strung up blue twinkling lights, a stage with large projector and a gorgeous view of the beautiful New York City skyline, with the Empire State Building resplendent in flashing colors, front & center.

As soon as we walked in, there were waiters with appetizers on trays. My favorite was the chicken filo cups- The chicken was shredded and had a hearty flavor, while the filo cups were flaky and wonderfully crispy at the same time. There was also smoked salmon stuffed cornbread. The cornbread was perfectly soft and buttery, with a slight flavor of salmon. I liked that the flavor of the salmon was not overpowering. Last, there were tomato basil mozzarella cheese balls. It was light, juicy and tasty. Then there were long tables beautifully arranged for a sit down dinner, with gold glitter down the middle and candles.

For dinner, we had the choice of tomato basil soup or salad. I had the soup, which was not warm and tasted mediocre in my opinion. The entree more than made up for it though. It was stuffed pork tenderloin with a side of wild rice and asparagus with sliced almonds and Parmesan cheese. I really enjoyed the stuffed pork- It was wrapped with bacon, and so deliciously tender and full of great flavor. The wild rice was also quite good, with the right consistency and flavor.  The asparagus were cooked well and the almonds and parmesan combined together was a yummy touch.

Then, we had some live entertainment and got to see some amazing singers and dancers perform. I enjoyed the heartfelt performances and the last song sung was “Twist & Shout” to get us all up and dancing. It worked. We danced for the next few hours with a live feed of the Times Square celebrations in the background.

We took a break from dancing to raid the dessert/candy buffet, which had various pastries, yellow cake with cream and fruit, cookies, chocolates, marshmallows, chocolate + yogurt covered pretzels, white covered peanuts, golden gumballs and more!

Before we knew it, it was the countdown to midnight! Champagne toast, shouting, hugs, kisses and love. I had such a wonderful time ringing in the new year dancing up a storm in the company of some great friends! And I even got a ride home. How I ask for a better New Year’s Eve?

Benihana Birthday Dinner

I received a $30 gift certificate for Benihana for my birthday through joining The Chef’s Table (which is free) and had a lovely dinner at the Benihana in Monterey, California. We were seated with another group, which is usually the case at Benihana if it is busy, so it was a little cramped but still enjoyable.  I selected the Samurai Treat entree meal. We started off with a clear mushroom soup, which had a nice light flavor to it, as well as some salad.

Then, since we knew one of the waitresses, she brought over two different plates of sushi: Shrimp tempura with avocado and California roll. The shrimp tempura roll were little bites of yummyness- Slightly crunchy, drizzled with that wonderful brown sauce and great flavor. The California roll was also good, but the shrimp tempura was better.

After that, our chef, Joshua came out. He was both skilled and personable. He gave quite a show, juggling the utensils and below he is creating the chicken fried rice right in front of our eyes! He shaped the fried rice into a heart and started making it look like it was moving, while flicking the lights on and off. That was pretty awesome. The fried rice was very tasty, with slightly browned chicken, along with onion and other vegetables. There was great flavor and everything combined together wonderfully.

Then, the chef started on the meal, cooking the zucchini, onion, mushroom and shrimp. He cooked everything with butter and used a couple of different sauces. He served the shrimp first – There were two different types. One was colossal shrimp grilled with lemon and butter and the other was a smaller size shrimp that tasted just as good. The shrimp was juicy, succulent and very flavorful. As for the vegetables, he stacked up the onions to look like a volcano and poured water over it so that it looked like it was erupting. The vegetables tasted fresh with a soft texture.

The filet mignon, grilled to perfection, completed the meal. It was melt in your mouth tender, rich with flavor and full of deliciousness! I also really liked the teriyaki beef julienne. The teriyaki sauce was divine- The right combination of sweet and salty, and the beef was also incredibly tender. And I loved the sauce so much that I would’ve loved it to coat the filet mignon!

Our meals came with ice cream, so I chose rainbow sherbet which was a beautiful bright pink and came with a cute little candle. The sherbet was okay, but a little too sweet. I also got to try the green tea ice cream, which was lovely and light. The staff at Benihana did their traditional birthday routine: Singing Happy Birthday in Japanese while drumming. then leading the Happy Birthday song in English.

Dinner & Cannery Row

My family and I went to a friend’s place for a delightful and delicious dinner the other night. We started off with some appetizers of pork spring rolls with lettuce and a sweet/sour sauce that accompanied the spring rolls perfectly. We also had shrimp chips and a wonderful fruit drink that was made fresh that day, thanks to their juicer

The main course was noodles with beef with cabbage and spinach in a slightly spiced soup. The beef was incredibly tender and full of robust flavor. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy.

For dessert we had mashed sweet peas with a dollop of whipped cream. It was a unique dish but I really enjoyed it. The consistency was soft and the whipped cream gave the sweet peas an added layer of yumminess.

After our dinner, we all took a walk along Cannery Row, which was beautifully lit up and quite a few stores still open. We stopped into Ghiradelli and other chocolate/caramel apple shops.

We also passed the Cannery Row Christmas Tree,  which was tall with blue, green, yellow lights and a brightly lit blue star on top.

Evening in Greenwich Village

My last evening in New York City before heading home to California for the holidays was mostly spent in Greenwich Village. Though, first I stopped by Tory Burch in SoHo to use my $50 birthday gift card. I picked out a classic Tory Burch shiny hot pink bracelet (the kind that wraps around twice) with gold circle detail that has the Tory Burch logo etched on. It definitely cost more than I would normally spend on jewelry, but the gift card definitely helped.

After the Tory Burch shopping excursion, I headed into the Village to meet my friend for a free birthday dinner at Slide. On the way, I found a cute little gift shop called Kado so I walked in and found myself in the middle of a fun, festive holiday party to promote Nicole Magazine. There was wine, snacks, wraps and goody bags! I left to check in at Slide and found that it was closed – Seized by the landlord! So, I had my friend meet me at the shop so we could enjoy the holiday atmosphere. I even got a bit of gift shopping in—Kado sells a plethora of cool merchandise, from deliciously scented candles, to bath & body products, to interesting books, to unique and whimsical plush stuffed animals…

After Kado, my friend suggested dinner at Café Espanol which was conveniently just down the street. It’s a cozy little restaurant and decorated with plenty of holiday cheer. We decided to order from the prix fixe menu ($21.99) which was quite good, however did not cover dessert much to our dissatisfaction.

I started off with Caldo Gallego Soup, which is white bean soup with cabbage, greens, potato and pork. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I didn’t expect the beans because the waiter’s description was quite vague.  Overall, it was pretty tasty and very hearty.

I then had the Croquetas (chicken and Serrano croquettes) for an appetizer. There were six croquetas total which was a lot more than I was expecting. And they were delicious! Little fried balls with chicken and ham inside, with béchamel white sauce. It was crispy on the outside and soft, meaty, flavorful on the inside. There was so much of it that it almost ruined my appetite for the main course. I said almost.

For the entrée, I picked tilapia filet with saffron rice. The tilapia was a nice large portion and seasoned well with pepper, herbs and a light sauce. It was decent, but would have liked it more if it was cooked more to a crisp. I did enjoy the saffron rice with peas and mixing it with the sauce that came with the fish.

After our meal, a waiter came over with a tray full of delectable looking desserts (flan, crème brulee, tres leches, cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake) which looked very tempting, but for once we were too full to partake in any dessert.

It turned out to be a truly lovely evening, despite the fact that Slide was closed. The Kado holiday party and dining at Café Espanol more than made up for it.

NYC Holiday Walk

It’s that time of year again… Sparkling holiday window displays, lit up wreaths & beautifully decorated Christmas trees, holiday markets, snowfall & glittering snowflakes and (hopefully) the feeling of joy & good cheer.

Some friends and I did a holiday walking tour along 5th Avenue, where we hit up classics such as Bergdorf Goodman, Columbus Circle, gorgeous hotels, Rockefeller Center and more. Of course I sighed at the sight of Tiffany & Co, their windows showcasing mini apartments against velvety-blue city skyline dotted with lit windows, sprinkled with brilliant rings and other pieces of jewelry.

I loved Bergdorf Goodman: Truly lovely, intricate designs and couture gowns. The first display was of a shiny white tree with icicles hanging from the ceiling. The next display, a patriotic affair of red, white, blue, complete with soldiers and a white horse. Third display showed a blue mountainous background with ice sculptures of a bear and other animals. The last was everything pink, girly with a crystal chandelier.

Next was Barneys, which boasted light projections, 3-D displays, LED screens and lots of silver and gold. “Collaborating with one of the City’s best-loved exports, Jay Z, the upscale retailer presents displays that are visually magnetic, multidimensional and interactive. One window features a jagged structure covered in thousands of mirrors that glimmer and glisten in a burst of reflections and patterns, while another displays a futuristic floating model of NYC that changes from white to brown to yellow and back to white thanks to a series of light projections.”

We then came across Maison 24, and I fell in love with their window displays… They combined some of my favorite things: Glitter, unicorns, hearts, the colors pink & silver…

We stopped by a couple of places, such as The Peninsula then came across the famous store front of Harry Winston and the building wrapped like a present.

Then there was Saks Fifth Avenue window display that showcases the adorable and colorful story of Yeti, the abominable snowman and his journey from Siberia to NYC.

And then some beautiful fashionable displays of dresses and suits… I especially liked the rose gold gown with sparkling sequin-like flower detail cascading down the dress.

Next we came to Rockefeller Center and caught sight of the traditional display of lit up angels lining the walk toward the center. The tree wasn’t up yet, but it was still a sight to behold.

I also loved the glow of snowflakes against the building across from Rockefeller Center. If you go before 6p, you’ll be able to witness the magical display of moving snowflakes, music and light.

And of course the very pretty twinkling blue lights in the trees surrounding the Rockefeller Center area.
