Holidays in Monterey

I spent the holidays in Monterey, California visiting with family and friends. It felt wonderful to be home for a couple weeks and enjoyed the home cooking, baking, trying new restaurants, watching movies, shopping, going to the aquarium/downtown/Fisherman’s Wharf, catching up with friends and getting into the Christmas spirit of joy, love and wonder.

Here are from scenes from around the town of Monterey.

I also enjoyed home cooking. One of the first meals I had back home was pork chops with onion, fried rice (made with purple rice), salad and a medley of colorful vegetables: Carrots, mushroom, celery. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful and wonderful.

Monterey2014_food
Another one of my favorite meals was made at a family friend’s place. We had Filipino style noodles with chicken, shrimp, carrots and lettuce. Then we made some fish with onions and shrimp with celery. For dessert, an assortment of cookies (some of them made by me!)

Monterey2014_food2

I loved the homemade lamb chop dish that I helped make. The lamb was seasoned perfectly and tasted tender and delicious. We also added onion and potato, which paired beautifully with the lamb.

Monterey2014_food3
On Christmas day, some family friends came over and we made Chinese steamed dumplings. We created the filling of sticky rice, mushrooms, meat and green onion from scratch and wrapped it in the dumpling skins. After that, they were steamed and they came out a bit soft but still very tasty, especially with some spicy soy sauce.

Monterey2014_food4

I made some baked goods as well… The classic chocolate chip cookies and also Christmas cookies with nuts and raisin filling, which we make every holiday season.

Monterey2014_cookies

We had fun getting into the holiday spirit by decorating the house with stockings over the fireplace, poinsettias and other flowers, mini Christmas tree…

Monterey2014_xmas

Since we didn’t have an actual Christmas tree, we visited family friends who did.

Monterey2014_xmas tree

On Christmas Eve, I had a chance to go to Candy Cane Lane (yes, that is an actual street name) and each house has to decorate on the outside so there is are tons of beautiful lights, displays and a center area with sleigh, reindeer, life size gingerbread house and more. It’s like a magical Christmas Winter Wonderland!

Below was one of my favorite decorated houses. I just loved the sparkling lights, the bits of blue and red in between the white and the reindeer going up to the chimney! I thought it was both sophisticated and adorable at the same time.

Monterey2014_lightsChristmas morning I made French toast then we opened presents.

Monterey2014_xmas day
We had dinner at Benihana, where I had a $30 gift certificate for my birthday. We had a great time and great meal there, as usual. It is always fun to watch the chef prepare our meals with finesse and skill. I ordered a passion fruit smoothie with strawberry swirls which was sweet, refreshing and delightful. I would have liked a bit more strawberry flavor though. For my meal, I had Filet Mignon and shrimp, which came with a multitude of sides and appetizers including soup, salad, chicken fried rice, shrimp and vegetables: Mushroom, zucchini and onion. Everything was well made and delicious. I also had chocolate ice cream which came with a lit candle in it and one of the servers played the drums and sang Happy Birthday!

Monterey2014_benihanaSoon after Christmas (2 days), it was my birthday! A friend of mine took me to Carmel for exploring, shopping and lunch at Cypress Inn, a super cute place owned by Doris Day, where they allow dogs. I had the fish and chips, which came with garlic french fries and it tasted amazing. The fish was fried to perfection with great flavor and the french fries were crispy and well seasoned.

Afterwards, I came home to a lovely surprise party! It was filled with amazing friends, great food, wonderful gifts and a delectable ice cream cake.

Below are some presents that I received: Clothes, money, scarves, accessories, chocolate and more. Some of my favorite gifts: A gorgeous gold heart necklace with diamonds and a scrapbook of Memories/my life that was made with love and care.

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 7,100 times in 2014. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Exploring Shanghai 2014

breakfast

I had an amazing time in China! I stayed with family in Shanghai, China most of the time, but we also took little trips to nearby smaller towns: Suzhou and Ningbo. (More on that later!)

I really enjoyed sightseeing at the Bund (with the view of the waterfront and Oriental Pearl Tower), Nanjing Lu and other famous shopping streets, beautiful malls, lovely botanical gardens, and Wild Animal Park (Z00), where we got to see lions, tigers/white tigers, cheetahs and bears up close in their natural habitat! Here are some photos from my adventures:

Weekend in Toronto

Toronto

A friend and I spent the Labor Day weekend in Toronto, Canada and had such an amazing time. In the short time that we were there, we were able to cover many of the sightseeing hot spots: Kensington Market, Eaton Centre, St. Lawrence Market, CN Tower, High Park, Casa Loma (Castle on the Hill) which was absolutely gorgeous, Royal Ontario Museum, as well as famous neighborhoods and streets. Favorites include Bloor Street West, Queen Street, Chinatown, Korea Town, and more…

In the evening, we headed to the Distillery District but did not find it to be a very happening place, so we continued on our way and had dinner at an Indian restaurant called Bombay Palace. It was a nice, quiet spot with wonderful mango lassi and tandoori chicken/prawn/sausage/naan bread special that came on a sizzling plate.

After Casa Loma, we headed to Honest Ed’s, a huge discount store. We were quite hungry so our next destination was Baton Rouge, where we ordered the baby back pork ribs which were delicious! They were cooked perfectly and slightly crispy. I also enjoyed the two sides: French fries and rice pilaf.

When we were done eating, we made our way to one of the famous streets (and my favorite street) of Toronto: Bloor Street West. We walked along Bloor St West from the HR department store with hot pink flags, and went past the high end shops, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Bata Shoe Museum, University of Toronto, cute little shops and eateries (including Greg’s Ice cream where I had the Coffee Toffee flavor which was truly delectable and a perfect balance of rich coffee and sweet toffee), Korea Town and more!

Toronto, Day 3

Today was the last day so I spent the morning at the Royal Ontario Museum which is quite cool with all different types of exhibits, ranging from fashion to Asian, to geology, to mammals and dinosaurs, from Neoclassical to Renaissance, from Greek to Roman and so much more.

Afternoon in Williamsburg

I don’t go to Brooklyn often, but I visited my friend in Williamsburg, Brooklyn the other weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Loved all the cute shops, great restaurants, cool graffiti. Plus, it’s very close to Manhattan, which is a big bonus. I got to check out my friend’s new loft and rooftop.

rooftop_me

The rooftop had gorgeous views of the city: Lovely buildings, Williamsburg Bridge, what used to be Williamsburg Savings Bank (now used as a premiere luxury events space)…

williamsburgThere were a lot of beautiful sights on that rooftop. This heart shape in the chain link fence, right in front of the gorgeous domed Williamsburg Savings Bank is one of those sights.

For lunch, we headed to an Indian restaurant called Mahal Kita.  The interior was spacious and elegant, with chandeliers and brown/tan color scheme.

mahalkita

As per usual at any Indian restaurant, I ordered a Mango Lassi drink. Since my friend frequents the restaurant, we got our drinks for free which was an unexpected and gracious gesture. The Mango Lassi was tasty, refreshing and not too sweet.

mangolassi

I chose the marinated rack of lamb with potatoes and peppers for my main course, which was delicious. The lamb was juicy, succulent, full of flavor in a delectable sauce and was slightly charred which is the way I like my meat. The medley of vegetables in an orange sauce was quite wonderful and paired with the lamb well, giving it an extra layer of flavor.

mahalkita_lamb

The meal at Mahal Kita was wonderful, the service attentive and they had a 20% off dine in special!

mahalkita_me

After our meal, we stopped into Pies n Thighs, the restaurant well known for its Southern cuisine which usually has an hour long wait to be seated… Luckily, they have desserts that can be purchased to go, so I got myself some apple pie (which I ate later). It was flaky tasty cinnamon spiced apple pie with a rich all butter crust… That crust was amazing.

williamsburg_pie

Then on my way back to the L train, I had to stop at Williamsburg Creamery, known for its homemade ice cream. I selected the White Raspberry with chocolate chunks and it was delectable and oh so mouthwatering and sweet! I also had the Vanilla ice cream with fudge and peanut butter, which I expected to like a lot more. It was actually too plain for me- The vanilla didn’t have enough of the fudge and peanut butter mixed in.

Screenings at the Academy Theater

AcademyStatue

I’m not a member of the Academy, but I sure felt like one when I attended two screenings last week at the Academy Theater (that’s right, the official theater for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences!) There’s even a life-size statue of Oscar, the Academy Award! (Pictured above).

The first screening was for Obvious Child (aired at Sundance Film Festival) and the other screening was Third Person (aired at Tribeca Film Festival).

AcademyTheater_Obvious Child

Obvious Child tells the story of a female comedian who becomes pregnant after a one night stand. It starts off kind of raunchy and raw but I grew to love the main character, Donna Sterns played by Jenny Slate. The film was watchable, real, brave, laugh-out-loud hilarious and tells this age-old story in a different and matter-of-fact narrative rarely seen on screen. The question was not whether Donna would have an abortion; it was about whether she would open her heart and be vulnerable to those she loves, as well as those who want to love her.

I truly adored Max’s character played by Jake Lacey. He was both sexy and sweet, the type of guy I would want to be with. Then there was Nellie, Donna’s outspoken best female friend played by Gaby Hoffmann. She was perfect as the best friend: Supportive, loving and always there when needed. And then there’s the gay best friend, Joey played by Gabe Liedman who was wonderful and fun. Donna’s relationship with her parents (who are separated) is complicated and deeply real. She has a closer relationship with her father (played by Richard Kind) who is warm and fun loving, while her mother (played by Polly Draper) is a little more distant and seemingly judgmental. This perception of the mother is changed during a key moment in the film, which I will let you discover for yourself…

Without revealing too much, the ending of Obvious Child is beautiful and speaks toward new beginnings.

AcademyTheater_Third Person

Third Person is romance psychological thriller drama with an excellent ensemble cast: Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Kim Basinger, Adrien Brody. The basic premise is that there are three couples living in Paris, Rome and New York City and have interlocking stories. The film is compelling, intense, extremely well acted and really pulls you in as more and more is revealed about the lives of each couple. There is a fair share of heartbreak and pain within the stories, as well as shocking revelations.

In Paris, Michael, a married writer played by Liam Neeson and a Anna, single woman played by Olivia Wilde sadistically toy with one another. Michael is moody and dark, while Olivia is gorgeous, sexy-crazy and a breath of fresh air. After learning about a different relationship she has, the audience begins to see the motivations behind her actions. Then there is Sean, a corporate thief played by Adrien Brody in Rome who meets a beautiful gypsy woman who may or may not be lying about her situation to steal his money… Lastly, in New York, we have a Julia, a mother who is estranged from her young son and Rick, the father who has both moved on and has custody of the son, played by Mila Kunis and James Franco, respectively. Julia is unreliable, emotional and constantly late, making it look like she doesn’t care, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

At the end, the parallels between the three stories become evident and the climactic scene is quite a whirlwind. You’re also left thinking about the film and trying to piece it all together.

I had a great experience viewing Obvious Child and Third Person at The Academy Theater. Both are now playing in theaters, so check them out!

Fleet Week 2014

fleetweek2014

Happy to report that Fleet Week was back this year! It was smaller than other years, but still had a great time, as you can surmise from meeting Marines and sailors in the Meatpacking District (above), as well as Coast Guards in Herald Square (below).

fleetweek_coastguards2014

I also took a tour of the USS Oak Hill at Pier 92. My friend and I had a fun time climbing on top of the machinery, chatting with Marines on duty.

fleetweek_marines2014

Then we went on the outside deck to see the planes and a gorgeous view of the water and NYC. We also took some shots with sailors, Navy officers and pilots.

Even though this comes late, I want to salute these men who are bravely fighting for our country and wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day!

World’s Fair Festival

worldsfair_unisphere
Last weekend I spent the day at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, home of the original Unisphere (above), for the World’s Fair Festival. We started off getting our ticket to go inside the New York State Pavilion, as well as the Queens Museum. As we were walking from place to place, we came across a display of awesome cars such as the original Batmobile that I am posing with below!

worldsfair_batmobile
Then we headed to the New York State Pavilion, which is an open-air pavilion that was used  “for local art and industry displays including a 26-foot scale reproduction of the New York State Power Authority’s St. Lawrence hydroelectric plant, comprised a 9,000-square-foot terrazzo replica of the official Texico highway map of New York State, displaying the map’s cities, towns, routes and Texaco gas stations in 567 mosaic panels.”

After touring the New York State Pavilion, we headed to the Queens Museum, where they had the original poster of the New York World’s Fair 1965.

worldsfair

There was also a panorama of all 5 boroughs of New York City. It was pretty cool to see the entire city laid out like that! We spotted some of the iconic landmarks, and even a little plane that flew out of LaGuardia Airport.

worldsfair_panorama2

After that, we went to one of the food vendors then listened to a Beatles tribute band then enjoyed some classical (live) orchestra music while sitting on the lawn, chatting it up in good company. I even got a cute hot pink (what other color would I choose?) light up Minnie Mouse ears!

worldsfair_minniemouse

After the band finished, we were privy to a spectacular, gorgeous, colorful display of dazzling glittering fireworks that rivaled any that I’ve seen before. It was amazing to see the fireworks so close up and a beautiful ending to a fun-filled day.

On the way out, we got the see the Unisphere in full splendor with the fountains turned on!
