Happy Chinese New Year!

chinesenewyear

Welcome to the Year of the Snake!

To celebrate, I had a sit-down dinner at home (I know, a rare occurrence) with family friends. We had a wonderful home-cooked meal of steamed whole white fish; Chinese-style fish with onions in a sweet/sour sauce; Chinese-style vegetables such as cabbage, spinach and tofu; fried radish; Chinese-style beef; shrimp with mushroom and tomatoes; soup of corn chowder and mushroom. Yum!

I will be continuing the celebration next weekend in Atlantic City at “Lunar New Year Extravaganza!” with a good friend of mine. We will be marching in the parade at the Atlantic City Boardwalk and be treated to free breakfast, lunch and round trip!

Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year and a year full of love, happiness and good fortune!

Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove

DisneyOnIce
A couple of weekends ago I headed over to Brooklyn and went with my friend to see “Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove” at the newly opened Barclay’s Center.

We had dinner first at SkyIce, known for their Northern Thai Home Cooking as well as homemade ice cream. I had the Non Fried- Fried Rice which came with shrimp, chicken, peas, mushrooms, pineapple, tomatoes and green onion. It was pretty tasty, but had a slightly spicy flavor that I could not place. We also tried some of their homemade, organic ice cream. I had Caramel Sea Salt and Honey-Ginger, and both were absolutely delicious. The caramel ice cream had a sweet strong caramel flavor, while the honey-ginger ice cream was delightfully subtle, both flavors melding together in exquisite taste.

DSCN3188
Afterwards, we walked the short distance to Barclay’s Center, which is a wide and expansive building. The exterior itself isn’t the most beautiful or ornate, as it is rust colored but the interior is quite spectacular. We got inside and were bombarded by concessions at exorbitant prices, such as popcorn for $12 and cute Disney paraphernalia such as little Cinderella slippers, Disney Princess necklaces, adorable cups with Princesses on them!

We finally got to our seats and had a decent view of the entire ice rink. The show started right on time, and started with warm up skating with the characters from “The Incredibles” and figure skaters in neon colors. After that, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck came out to introduce the show and show us the treasure chest of Disney stories.

DSCN3200

The first story was Alice & Wonderland, which started with the Rabbit being late and took us through the entrance of the Queen and the croquet game. It was pretty well done, humorous and Alice did a wonderful job.

alicewonderland
The next tale was Peter Pan, where they showed several long scenes, from Captain Hook coming in on his huge ship, to Wendy singing about about what a mother means, to Wendy and the boys being captured, to Tinkerbell telling Peter Pan about the capture, then back to Wendy being captured by Captain Hook and on the verge of walking the plank, all the way through to Peter Pan saving the day and Captain Hook being eaten by the humongous crocodile!

After the intermission, it opened up with Lion King right away, which I absolutely loved. They went through the whole story, starting with Rafiki holding Simba up, then came Simba’s song, “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King.” Next was Mufasa’s version of the same sentiment, then the intense scene of the stampede of the wilderbeests and the tragic death of Simba’s father, which was blamed on Simba by the nefarious Mufasa and which led Simba to run away, meeting Timon and Pumba and their rendition of “Hakuna Matata.” However, my favorite part was when Simba and Nala came together to do the heart stirring “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Their pairs skating was amazing and I could feel the chemistry between them. It was just fiercely moving and fiercely beautiful. Lion King ended with the couple ruling over their Kingdom, and all the animals dancing around them.

lionking

Next was the first story that Disney ever made, Snow White. This one was charming and playful.  And Snow White was perfectly lovely and graceful. After that was Aladdin, which was colorful and thoroughly enjoyable. It shows the Aladdin meeting the Genie, the royal procession of Price Ali on his elephant to impress Princess Jasmine and the magic carpet ride, singing “A Whole New World.” I loved the song, and the skating between the two was sweet and romantic.

DSCN3232
Little Mermaid (one of my favorite Disney movies) was way too short, with only one song: “Under the Sea.” Not the song I would have picked. I also didn’t think that Ariel was mermaid-y enough and there was something about her that I didn’t quite make me believe her as Ariel.

littlemermaid

Then there was the new story of Rapunzel from Tangled. This one was quite fun, as it showed Rapunzel meeting Flynn for the first time and Flynn taking her to see the floating lanterns in the night sky, which was magical and wonderful. Flynn was very handsome and their pairs skating was energetic, graceful and delightful.

Tangled

Last was the story of The Princess of the Frog, showing Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen in their heartfelt dance.

In the finale, all the Princess and Prince couples from the show came waltzing out, along with other classics, such as Cinderella in that gorgeous sparkling white blue gown, to Beauty and the Beast which are the two that should have been included. There were also fireworks and sweet ending of Mickey and Minnie getting married!

DSCN3260

While I have to admit that the Peter Pan story was well acted, I would have preferred it if Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove didn’t spend quite so much time on Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland and focused on a few more of the Classics, but all in all a solid performance with gorgeous singing, amazing costume designs, poetic figure skating and delightful Disney stories.

Lunch at Mercer Kitchen

DSCN3149

I have been wanting to try Mercer Kitchen for awhile now, so decided to check it out with a good friend, for lunch at Restaurant Week. It’s a trendy restaurant smack dab in the middle of Soho at the Mercer Hotel, with the dining area downstairs, underneath the street where we could see people walking above us through the latticework on the ceiling. Exposed brick walls, long banquettes, and candlelit sconces give the place a timelessly stylish, chic and sophisticated ambiance.

mercerkitchen
The meal itself was also wonderful. I started off with black truffle and fontina cheese pizza. Usually I like my pizza to have tons of different toppings, but this one didn’t need it. It was amazing on its own, and quite a nicely sized personal pizza — I ended up taking half of it home. If you like truffle oil or truffle in general, you need to order this pizza! It had the perfect balance of cheesy goodness and hints of black truffle in each bite. However, was a little bit on the oily side.

DSCN3136

For the main course, I ordered (The Mercer) Burger which consisted of pepperjack cheese (which I replaced with cheddar), crunchy red onions, Russian dressing and french fries. The burger was on the small side, but don’t be fooled… It will still fill you up and is well made. The meat was juicy and flavorful. I especially enjoyed the taste of the crispy fried onions with cheese and dressing. The lettuce and tomato were both fresh and added to the overall deliciousness. I also liked the skinny fries- They were quite crispfully tasty.

DSCN3141

My friend, however had chosen the Veal Milanese which was according to her, tasteless and inedible. To the waiter’s credit, he took it back without any attitude and brought out her next choice of Steam Skate with Tarragon, Sesame Seed, and Baby Bak Choy, almost right away.

Dessert was warm Valrhona chocolate cake with crisp Orange Tuile and Vanilla Bean gelato. This molten chocolate cake was heavenly- Rich and oozing with sweet chocolateness. I loved the warm chocolate filling, but to be honest didn’t really taste the orange bit. And the vanilla bean gelato was a disappointment. It was a little bland, as it lacked vanilla bean flavor.

DSCN3142

My friend’s banana cake with salted caramel gelato was a true delight and that gelato was superb- Very sweet, strong caramel flavor. Yum!

Overall, a lovely meal with lovely company and attentive, friendly and professional service.

Hot Chocolate Crawl

hotchocolate

I had the pleasure of participating in a hot chocolate crawl on Sunday with the most fun group of friends ever.

jacques-torres

We started off at Jacques Torres, where I’ve been to previously and had enjoyed the frozen hot chocolate as well as the ice cream sandwiches. I had heard good things about the hot chocolate here so I was looking forward to sampling. My friend and I had wanted a peanut butter hot chocolate but they didn’t have that ready so we went for the caramel hot chocolate. I had high expectations and was unimpressed. The caramel taste wasn’t strong enough, the chocolate not chocolatey enough but at least we had gotten whipped cream, while other members of the group hadn’t. I then got to try the hot chocolate with orange which was much more satisfactory – delightful orange flavor and overall just a lovely mix of orange & chocolate.

vosges

The next stop was in the heart of Soho at Vosges, which was beautifully decorated with deep purple and white. I also liked the pretty Keats poem gorgeously written out on a huge board. Everything was so lovely, but also a little pretentious. But Bianca hot chocolate was amazing. It is is made of white chocolate, a hint of lavender and flavors reminiscent of lemongrass and kaffir.  The taste was delicate, milky, luscious and unique. It was also not too sweet- just right. The finesse and beauty of this hot chocolate far surpassed that of Jacques Torres.

DSCN3111

MarieBelle was our next spot and this place is a wonderland of exquisite designs and chocolates. We were greeted by a very lovely staffer and she let us know that their hot chocolates are made with water, not milk, in the tradition of European hot chocolate. We thought that the hot chocolate would not  be as rich this way, but we were in for a surprise. We chose the Hazelnut hot chocolate and it was amazing- Pure chocolate taste, incredibly thick, rich, hot, and divine. It reminded of Nutella and pure delicious hot chocolate. This was the best place for a classic cup of hot chocolate, and it didn’t even need the marshmallows.

My friends went on to the heart of the West Village to visit Chocolate Bar and City Bakery, but I had other plans so sadly did not get to join them. I haven’t been to Chocolate Bar yet but have tried City Bakery and they are known for the delectable huge marshmallows- I would recommend. By the way, next month, City Bakery is having their 21st Annual Hot Chocolate Festival Calendar of Flavors! I, personally would go for Ginger, Love Potion, Ode to the Polar Bear… Care to join?

Restaurant Week Dinner at PO

DSCN3047

Po is a delightful little Italian restaurant tucked away on Cornelia Street in the West Village.  The vision for Po is simple: “A restaurant that serves fresh, simply prepared seasonal fare in a cozy and inviting neighborhood setting.” And this they have done.

After we were seated, we were served a nice chunk of bread with a side of olive oil, as well as complimentary white bean bruschetta– Sliced bread with white beans and more olive oil. Even though I’m not a huge fan of beans, this tasted quite good: Full of flavor, though very oily. I also loved the crispiness of the bread.

DSCN3038

We ordered off the Restaurant Week Menu, which pretty much had the best dishes from the menu and even some that weren’t on the regular menu. I started off with the Sea Bass Ravioli, made with tomato sauce and scallion butter. I expected it to be a little more substantial, as the plate only came with 3 medium-sized ravioli pieces. It was also a little lacking in presentation. I thought it was decent. The sauce was light, and could definitely taste the sea bass which was the best part by far.

DSCN3039
My entree was veal porcini ragu with fusili pasta, which was delicious. The veal was extremely tender, full of flavor and combined well with the porcini mushrooms. The fusili was cooked to perfection and there was just enough sauce to taste, but not overpower the distinct flavors of veal and porcini. Add to the dish some Parmesan and  a sprinkling of pepper to enhance the flavors, and voilà!

DSCN3041

Next was dessert, which was dark chocolate terrine and drizzled with espresso caramel sauce. The terrine was delectable, with a strong flavor of amaretto and just melted in my mouth. I also loved the sweet smooth flavor of the caramel sauce to go with it. Overall, it was wonderfully rich and creamy. Almost too rich, with almost being the operative word. I still ate most of the chocolate terrine…

DSCN3045

My friend was able to get the other dessert and luckily, shared some with me: Apple torta with vanilla gelato. Now, this dessert was amazing! I have always been a lover of chocolate, but this apple torta was even better than the dark chocolate terrine. The apple torta came to us warm, seemingly straight from the oven. The torta was  chewy, flaky, buttery and crisp all at once. The crust was caramelized and crisp, and had the distinct flavor of caramel. The vanilla gelato was the perfect companion: Creamy, smooth, and flavorful.

DSCN3046

Despite my initial reservations, Restaurant Week Dinner at Po turned out to be a delightful experience with great food and pleasant service.

Address: 31 Cornelia Street.

Take advantage of NYC Restaurant Week: Winter 2013, which is from January 14 to February 8, 2013. This is when a ton of well known and usually quite expensive restaurants offer a special 3-course meal, which is $25 for lunch and $38 for dinner. Here’s a sampling of participating restaurants: 21 Club, Capital Grille, Le Cirque, Locanda Verde, Morimoto, Nobu, The Palm Court, Russian Tea Room, and Spice Market… And I’ve been to 5 of these (for past Restaurant Weeks.)

Stay tuned for upcoming Winter Restaurant Week reviews!

Snowshoeing at High Point

DSCN2978

This past weekend I went snowshoeing for the first time at High Point, New Jersey and it turned out to be a great experience! Despite forecasting of little to no snow, there was plenty to be found and I loved the winter wonderland view of the woods covered with snow and the lake with frosted ice.

Before starting out snowshoeing, I met a beautiful Husky mix named Miko with a friendly, sweet demeanor and went over to pet, hug and play with her. She was so soft and had gorgeous coloring- It looked like she belonged in the snowy atmosphere. I so wanted to take her with me- I absolutely adore Huskies (and want one of my own)!

DSCN2972

After spending time with Miko, we left to try out our snowshoes (Brand: Tubbs, which we were told are top of the line) and took a hike around the lake. It was actually fairly easy to get the hang of the snowshoes, especially since we started out on flat surface. We had to get through a more rocky, treacherous part while we were snowshoeing around the lake though. However, we managed to get through it, with our snowshoes still on, so we felt pretty accomplished afterwards.

DSCN2980

After the hike around the lake, we went on a short hike with a Naturalist who gave us some history of the place and what kind of animals live in the area. It was pretty interesting but we wanted to trek out on a more challenging trail, so the whole group of us made our way up to the Monument.

DSCN2985

It wasn’t too bad as a lot of the way was sort of flat (my favorite parts), with a bit of an uphill incline. However, there were some parts as we got closer to the Monument that were steeper going uphill which was a bit difficult for me but I kept going and made it to our destination.  Anyway, it was great to be up there and of course the view was fantastic!

DSCN3003

We took a little break to have some lunch. I was blessed to have people share their food with me and enjoyed apple slices, half a turkey bacon sandwich and a trail mix bar. After eating, sitting and chatting for a bit, we continued back to the lodge. Thank goodness we went the trail was on a loop so that the way back was mostly downhill. We got down to the lake and had to go through the rocky part again, but thankfully had much help.

It felt good to be inside, with our snowshoes off! We sat by the fireplace, had some hot chocolate and enjoyed each others’ company.

It was such a beautiful day: Great company, good times, lots of exercise, wonderful weather… The only thing that would’ve made it better if we had the chance to play in the snow. I’m talking snowball fight, building snowmen, making snow angels but we still had a very full and fun day!

Birthday in NYC

DSCN2820

Since I was in CA when my birthday hit, I celebrated with New York friends over the weekend, after I came back from holidays in California. I wore my new “Bright By My Side” dress that I ordered online from ModCloth. This flattering and sassy coral red dress is made of crepe fabric with sheer, puffy long sleeves with wrapped bodice and waist sash. I paired the dress with fashions from Shanghai: Coffee colored tights with cute little hearts all over and black high heel glittery boots, that are actually comfortable. And, of course the outfit would not be complete without an exquisitely sparkly and pearl tiara.

DSCN2909

I had my birthday dinner with a bunch of friends at Max Brenner at Union Square, which is a fun place to eat but incredibly crowded on a Saturday night and where we had to wait quite awhile, even with reservations. We were finally seated downstairs, in nice booth seating and I ordered one of the sharing dessert tastings with chocolate fondue. Our orders came fairly quickly and mine included a birthday candle on top an ice cream scoop, which was on a sweet waffle with berries. Everyone sang Happy Birthday, then we dug in!

bday ny

The dessert meal was pretty good, and was presented in a way that made it fun and creative to share. We had marshmallows that we could roast on the open fire (we had a little bit too much fun with that), as well as strawberries, bananas, cake, fried plantains, and the waffle. I pretty much dipped everything in the chocolate fondue. Yum! I also got to try some onion rings, waffle fries and black sesame encrusted salmon. If I had to order a non-dessert item, it would definitely be the salmon- Perfectly crispy, good flavor, beautifully presented.

DSCN2852

After eating, we were planning to spend the evening at Polar Lounge, which is located within the Marcel at Gramercy. However, we were informed that Polar was closed, so we waited for others in the lobby at the Marcel, which was actually quite lovely with silver and white accents… A silver couch, an area with a rectangular fireplace, and the main lobby area had a circular sleek black couch surrounding the room. In the center of the room, little white tables were adorned with candles, pretty pink, red and green flower bouquets on top. And the walls had interesting geometric patterns of white, brown and black colors.

DSCN2886

After more folks gathered at the Marcel lobby, we headed onward, in search of a suitable place to party. We passed by a park with this huge, gorgeous ball that changes into all different colors. There were also viewing seats that we could lay back on and watch the magic.

DSCN2904
We decided to go to Vunyc rooftop, which had a breathtaking and very close view of the Empire State Building! We had some drinks, shared great conversation, laughter and all around had a great time together.

The night didn’t end there. We barhopped a bit in the East Village and hit up Gin Palace and Easternbloc, where we did a lot of dancing and got a little crazy! I had a wonderful time with everyone… Even though we couldn’t party at Polar, we found some great places (and unexpected) to hang out at and enjoy each others company!

Gilroy Gardens Holiday Lights

Gilroy-Gardens-H-Lights

Gilroy Gardens Holiday Lights

We took a family trip to Gilroy Gradens Holiday Lights which was a wonderland of millions of lights and endless wonder. As you walk through the entrance, you are transported to Candy Cane Lane, where the trees are lined with lights and lit up large candy canes.

DSCN2477

Candy Cane Lane

Continuing on, you will see trees, bushes, buildings covered in colorful, bright lights.  Then, there is fake snow swirling about and both Sally & Snoopy from Charlie Brown, are there to give you a friendly greeting.  There are also fun souvenir shops and rides, such as the beautifully exquisite carosuel.

We got to see the Waterfall Illumination, which showed a music and lights display. The display was quite a magical experience. It starts off with the waterfall becoming pitch black, then lights of red, green, pink, purple, and blue, dance to the beat of “Little Drummer Boy.”

DSCN2532

Waterfall Illumination

Afterwards, we went on a train ride around the Gardens. It was nice to be able to see all the different areas around the park. We ended the night by seeing “A Charlie Brown Christmas” show which featured Charlie Brown, Lucy, Sally, Linus and Snoopy, in a performance about the true meaning of Christmas. Though the play was targeted to children, I still enjoyed watching the very adorable and fun musical. The characters did a great job with telling a story, helping us to really get into the holiday spirit. One of my favorite parts was when Snoopy was trying to light the Christmas tree, which didn’t work but after we all chanted, “Peace on Earth; good will towards men,” the tree miraculously lit up!

DSCN2560

Charlie Brown Christmas

We did a little exploring before leaving and got to see an area full of delicious & huge looking lit up cupcakes, gingerbread cookies, and lollipops. We also came across the Butterfly exhibit, which was nice with leafy greens, red flowers, large trees, decorated Christmas trees of all different colors. Then, we happened across a great big hall called the Snowflake Palace which had tons of lights strung up on top, creating a gorgeous sparkling view that was a sight to behold.

Hotel Abrego Dining

Hotel Abrego

Hotel Abrego

Recently, I had the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful meal at the not-yet officially opened restaurant at Hotel Abrego in Monterey, California. The Hotel Abrego lobby and dining area is warm, inviting and cozy, complete with brown accents, a stone fireplace and lovely lighting.

The chef, Marc Jones, personally came out to introduce himself and present us with the menu. He was personable, knowledgeable about the food he prepares and concerned with keeping everything sustainable. The menu itself didn’t have a ton of choices, but that didn’t bother me as it normally would, because all the choices sounded so delicious! For an appetizer, we had salad which came with grapes, tomato, fresh lettuce, Parmesan and pepper with a light vinaigrette.  It was tasty and I enjoyed the added sweet flavor of the grapes, combined with savory.

food

Salad

I also loved the honey bread which came with the meal. It was perfectly crisp, fresh and warm from the oven, a delightful mix of sweet and a tiny bit of salty. It was something different, but delicious. I couldn’t get enough of these little morsels!

food2

Honey Bread

We tried 2 different main courses. The first being pan fried Alaskan sand dabs, accented with grilled squash on the sides and mashed potato below. The sand dabs were fried in butter and topped with olive oil. I enjoyed the crispy well done texture of the sand dabs, as well as the yummy flavor. The mashed potato was superb, perfectly creamy and smooth, and seasoned well.

food3

Pan-Fried Sand Dabs

The other dish was bacon-wrapped shrimp with filet mignon with risotto and mushroom sauce. The bacon worked well with the shrimp, and the risotto had a great appetizing flavor to it, but I think my favorite was the filet mignon. The filet was amazing- Tender, like butter and quite juicy, full of deliciousness.

food4

Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp, Filet Mignon, Risotto

I will have to come back to try the desserts, calamari appetizer and filet of sole, cooked in parchment paper, with a bounty of in season vegetables.
